6/29/2023 0 Comments Typoking font kit![]() I’m disappointed not to have access to Typekit for desktop with my new Creative Cloud subscription, but fortunately, I have a little Samsung machine running Windows 8, on which can use Typekit without problems. I’ll just wait till I’m forced to buy a new machine which will have the new OS on it. that I’m simply not willing to give up the stability of Snow Leopard to have to deal with a slew of new OS issues. Some of the big advantages of Mountain Lion are not ones we can even use on older hardware (airdrop, mirroring), and I’ve read so many reports of high operating temps, annoyances with autosave, random slowdowns, reduced battery life, etc. I too have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on an early 2009 Macbook Pro, and have been reluctant to upgrade to Mountain Lion. Here’s the result-a seemingly blank folder. I selected the font in the list and chose Reveal in Finder. After I placed some type in InDesign created with a Typekit font, I opened Type > Find Font. Of course, some of us like to look “under the hood” to figure out how this will work. We are currently exploring the best way to integrate Typekit desktop fonts with the packaging feature of InDesign and Illustrator. We want to make it as easy as possible for Typekit users to get their work to print bureaus or anywhere else. (Note that most existing font license agreements – including that for the Adobe Type Library and Font Folio – do not allow sending font files to third parties, unless that third party has their own license to the same font.) Print bureaus will be able to access desktop fonts through their own Creative Cloud or Typekit subscription, or you can create a PDF to transfer for print output. Q: How will that work when my print bureau requires me to send a packaged version of an inDesign folder?Ī: The Typekit Terms of Use do not allow copying or moving of font data that has been synced to your desktop computer. Here’s how the Typekit FAQ on Packaging currently reads: Unfortunately, while a Typekit font looks like any other font, it has some limitations: Officially, it cannot be shared with other people who are not subscribers to the Adobe Creative Cloud (you can also subscribe to the Typekit service by itself). Typekit fonts show up in your font menus just like other fonts. It’s also available not only in all the Adobe Creative Cloud applications like InDesign CC, Illustrator CC and Photoshop CC, but in other applications on your computer as well. When you click to download a font, or a family of fonts (usually limited to about four styles for desktop fonts at this time), it is “synced” to your computer and shows up in your list of available fonts. Under those choices are a list of some of the fonts I’ve synced from Typekit. ![]() ![]() Then the Fonts tab becomes available, and you have options to Browse Fonts on Typekit and Manage Fonts. When you are emailed your invitation, you’ll download a newer version of the Creative Cloud Desktop application you use to download applications, sync files, and so on. Adobe is now rolling it out slowly, but they’re encouraging those who’d like to try it out to apply for early access. Typekit for the Desktop was announced at the MAX Conference in May, but wasn’t available when Adobe Creative Cloud was updated in June. It’s very exciting to use these fonts for print, PDF and EPUB! Typekit fonts from a variety of font foundries have been available through the Creative Cloud for some time for use on websites. One which has excited me the most is the new ability to explore downloading Typekit fonts for the Desktop. 6/29/2023 0 Comments Skull and bones patch![]() Gach writes that this is a concern shared by multiple sources close to the game's development. One source involved with the test told Kotaku that gameplay was more refined than in previous tests but that progression needed work as it still felt too shallow. According to Gach in his Kotaku story, the latest technical test for the game ended on September 19. ![]() Kotaku's Ethan Gach says sources say the teams working on Skull and Bones are burnt out. Originally founded by William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft, the former who was inspired by occultist groups hed encountered on a trip to Germany. As for why, the team cites a need for more polish and balancing. Skull and Bones was founded in the height of the antebellum era, and despite its northern location from the very beginning has had its roots in racism and elitism. Then, in May of last year, Ubisoft announced that Skull and Bones would release sometime between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023. And now, it's slipping out of its November 8 release date, which was only just announced back in July, into a new Madate. It was delayed to at least March 2020 after that, but things went quiet and the game missed that window. Then House of Hong had a $200,000 arson fire. That February was the nearby Wah Mee Club Massacre, which scared some patrons. They moved to the present location and opened the House of Hong in 1983. Restaurant history: The family ran the Atlas Restaurant at Maynard and Jackson from 1956 to 1982. When the communists took over in 1950, Louie Hong and his wife came to the United States. Mon Faye was born in Canton Province, the other children here. After working for a few years, he returned to China and wed Shau Fong Louie. Family history: Louie Hong emigrated here about 60 years ago. ``You could say we're the stereotypical family,'' Hugo says. Though Mon, James, Susan and Hugo have worked in other fields, they always have been drawn back to the restaurant. Hugo Louie, is vice president and assistant manager, and also works as a chef. Susan Hong Louie Woo, works in the kitchen. James Louie, assistant manager, handles the restaurant at night. Mon's wife, Janie, is the restaurant's secretary-treasurer and hostess. The family: Mon Faye Hong, the oldest son, is president and head chef. His wife, Shau Fong Louie, often helps make dim sum in the kitchen. The family patriarch, who died at age 78 in November, worked until he became ill last August. When asked how he feels about not having to run the restaurant, Tan said, “Freedom.- Who they are: The family of the late Louie Hong operates the House of Hong restaurant at 409 Eighth Ave. Tan has been a constant supporter for many community groups and charitable functions, including Japan’s tsunami benefit dinner, which raised over $70,000. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have lasted that long.” He said, “I can absorb the loss since I own another wholesale food business. Known for his generosity, Tan said he has been losing money since he took over Hong 10 years ago. They pretended to be customers, ordered food, used the restroom, and then left. Nelson said some homeless folks have used the restroom in Hong. “Who wants to eat here (with those tents nearby)?” he asked. “Wages and costs are high, and it’s tough to be next to the many homeless tents (under the freeway),” said Nelson. He was one of the original staff members when the restaurant first opened in 1983. “It’s a tough business to run a restaurant in Chinatown,” said waiter Nelson, who didn’t want to reveal his last name. He said he and the other side are happy with the result. Lee would not disclose the amount for buying back the business. Lee plans to reopen the restaurant on Aug. The restaurant will be temporarily closed for remodeling. ![]() Lee called the Northwest Asian Weekly on July 12 and said he plans to buy back Hong. Lee bought both the property and business from founder Faye Hong. The new owner is Po Lee, who owned the House of Hong a decade ago. Owner Tan Tho Tien hosted two dinners on July 10 and 11, one for community leaders to thank them for their support over the years and the other for old and new staff members. As of July 13, the sign was changed to say they are closed for remodeling. When our editor walked by on July 12, the sign at the Hong’s door read, “We are closed.” The lights were out. Update 26 October 2012: Since X11 support has been dropped from OS X you have to take some extra steps to install Inkscape on Mountain Lion. Download Inkscape for Mac to give full scope to your imagination with highly extensible, professional-grade artistic and technical vector imagery. I was then able to open it directly with Inkscape and the objects were all in tact for me to change their fill and stroke to my heart’s content. The Enscape for Mac SketchUp plugin is currently the only way to use Enscape on a Mac without running Windows on a Mac via Boot Camp. All I had to do was open the EPS in Preview and Save As… PDF. The Enscape for Sketchup plugin works on both Intel and Apple Silicon M1 and M2 Macs. Inkscapes primary vector graphics format is Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), however many other formats can be imported and exported. One thing Preview is quite good at is saving files in different formats. Inkscape is a free and open-source vector graphics editor it can be used to create or edit vector graphics such as illustrations, diagrams, line arts, charts, logos and complex paintings. I bet loads of people view their PDFs in Preview every day with no idea of its hidden power… Everything I need is already on my computer: Preview. I realised I didn’t need extra software to convert an EPS to PDF. I did a quick search for converting EPS files and saw several references to PDF and opening the PDF in Inkscape. Recently I needed to change the colour of an EPS image and I didn’t want to do a hack job by just filling a new colour over a bitmap versions. Inkscape is free to use it manages to tick all the boxes that professional tools, like Adobe Illustrator, do.EPS files have their uses, for sure, but they seem to be a standard output of Adobe Illustrator, which is a bit sad, because Inkscape (the open source vector editor I use) can’t open them (without some hassle with ghostscripts or something). Inkscape is an excellent free product and its main focus is the creation of vector based graphics - it does this exceptionally well. Professionals can still take it into consideration, as long as their clients don't request a specific program for the process. It’s a perfect choice for hobbyists, freelancers, students, and beginners. To create a new document from one of Inkscapes many templates, use FileNew from Template or press Ctrl+Alt+N.' There is no Alt key on my Mac. Inkscape has many features not found in other tools for vector drawing. Example from the Basic Tutorial: 'To create a new empty document, use FileNew or press Ctrl+N. Inkscape is an open source vector graphics editor, similar to Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw, or InDesign with the W3C specification dictating the type of art layout formats it supports. Inkscape is very straightforward and easy to understand. Several Inkscape operations involve the Alt key. Not only does it support the SVG format, but it’s also compatible with PostScript, EPS, and the typical image types you’re used to. The list of tools this program offers feels endless. However, you’d be surprised to know that Inkscape supports more file types than Illustrator. Once again, you can open this folder by selecting Go Downloads. Once the download has finished, open your Downloads folder in the Finder. Click the box labelled Mac OS X 10.7 Installer (xquartz) to download the DMG file, which contains the installer. ![]() These two programs are very similar in function and design. Using a web browser, go to the Inkscape 0.92.2 downloads page. You’ve likely heard of Adobe Illustrator. It does a better job aiding its users than most other vector-based painters. The only truly official tutorials are those packaged with the program, which you can find in the Help menu > Tutorials. At this writing more than 95 are made by Inkscape users, and scattered hither and yon across the internet. It helps guide your hand while working on a project by providing a simple mechanism for modifying nodes and paths. The Inkscape community has produced a vast volume of tutorials over the years. Inkscape is incredibly simple that’s where it really stands out and shines. Whether you’re working on a logo or designing complex diagrams, Inkscape has most of what you’ll need. When your creative juices get flowing, you need to find a place to direct them. Vector design made easy Inkscape is a top-notch vector graphic design program so great, it’s hard to believe it’s free. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Readynas acrosync![]() Inside this configuration files are various module definitions (specifying the path etc), the module must be chroot failed I was editing /etc/nf when it should have been /etc/nf. The sound source (e.g., a sound recording or a microphone) must be amplified or strengthened with an audio power amplifier before the signal is sent to the speaker. Besides this most common method, there are several alternative technologies that can be used to convert an electrical signal into sound. When an alternating current electrical audio signal is applied to its voice coil, a coil of wire suspended in a circular gap between the poles of a permanent magnet, the coil is forced to move rapidly back and forth due to Faraday's law of induction, which causes a diaphragm (usually conically shaped) attached to the coil to move back and forth, pushing on the air to create sound waves. The dynamic speaker operates on the same basic principle as a dynamic microphone, but in reverse, to produce sound from an electrical signal. The most widely used type of speaker in the 2010s is the dynamic speaker, invented in 1925 by Edward W. A loudspeaker (or loud-speaker or speaker) is an electroacoustic transducer which converts an electrical audio signal into a corresponding sound. He turns the hat inside out and shows them that it is red. After they have fought for a while Esu returns and shows them that they are both wrongs about the hat. The farmers then proceed to argue about the color of the hat that Esu is wearing. One day Esu put on a hat that is black on one side and white on the other. In one story two farmers who live next to each other decide to make a pact that they will never argue with each other again since they are such good friends. Esu is also great at exposing man’s follies. Esu is a great satirist and is always blamed when life plays a trick on the African people. In Africa, the Trickster we encounter goes by the name of Esu. Stories about him also provide comic relief and make him one of the Greek’s favorite Gods. He is seen as guiding people in transition. Icons of Hermes were displayed in front of houses and where roads intersect. In Greek culture, Hermes is seen as a patron of facilitating roles as opposed to commanding roles (p.48 Hynes and Doty). Hermes is said to have wings on either side of his head. Also with Hermes, we see the recurring theme of flight. Hermes is the only God in Greek mythology that is born to a nymph (a mortal). Once again we see a sort of bridge between the average man and the gods. The Trickster of Greek mythology was a God by the name of Hermes. The long fall from the cliff to the ground. Wile would come up with some elaborate schemes, but in the end, the result was always the same. The creators of him were interested in the comedic value they saw in Native American stories and adapted him into a cartoon. The Looney Toons character was always after the Road Runner. ( p.87 Hynes and Doty)ĭoes this character sound familiar? Millions of kids grew up with this very same character, but we knew him as Wile Coyote. The coyote always has an elaborate scheme for flight, like hitching a ride with a buzzard, but the end is always the same. Through meditation, the Shaman is said to be able to fly. ![]() The coyote is always looking for a shortcut. The Shaman looks to the supernatural for his strength while the coyote relies on his own wits. The Trickster can be seen as a parody of the Shaman, or the spiritual leader of the tribe. Perhaps these stories are meant to teach Native Americans not to aspire to be anything more than human. ![]() No matter how hard he tries he cannot escape the human condition. He is always attempting to fly (which is the sign of a god to the Native Americans) with disastrous consequences. He is earthbound, like man, but is constantly trying to transcend this fate. In Native American stories, he takes the form of the coyote. The Trickster shares many attributes with man. And he will pull off elaborate schemes to teach a moral lesson or expose the folly of men. He provides comic relief to a religious myth. In religious stories, his role is very diverse. The trickster seems to be a comedy of opposites.įor every good aspect of his persona, there is an equal and opposite aspect. The malicious practical joker is deceived by just about anybody the inventor of ingenious stratagems is presented as an idiot the master of magical power is sometimes powerless to extricate himself from quandaries.” (p.67 Hynes and Doty). “ Admired, Loved, venerated for his merits and virtues, he is represented as thievish, deceitful, parricidal, incestuous, and cannibalistic. The best way to view a trickster is by his personality. His physical form seems to be particular to each religion. So who is this Trickster? He has many forms both human and animal. This suggests that the Trickster is within all of us just sitting on the borderline of conscious and unconscious thought. In his research on schizophrenia, he found the qualities of the trickster surfacing in the disorder (p.54 Euba). Evidence to support such a claim was found by psychologist John Laynard. Jung would say he is a manifestation of our own collective unconscious. Each trickster is unique to its own culture, but all tricksters are bound by certain characteristics no matter what religion they show up in.Īnthropologists would argue that each trickster should be evaluated in its own cultural setting, but in order to see their archetypal value, they must be and can be evaluated as a group. The “Trickster” is an archetype that surfaces in many cultural and religious stories. Studying it reminds us that all humans are bound together by a common source. Yet it is not visible to the naked eye, one must look for the signs of it by researching cultures who are long gone and comparing them to each other and our own. That thread of consciousness connects all human beings and cultures around the world. Carl Jung’s explanation for the archetypes that surface in cultural and religious literature is that they are the product of what he calls the collective unconsciousness. 6/28/2023 0 Comments Eisenhower priority matrix![]() (Multiple matrices with a broader perspective make it hard to reach complete consensus on priorities.) Full Analytical Criteria: This is the most complex and rigorous method, reserved for the most critical issues, according to Hambleton.Author Lynne Hambleton discusses the three types of priority matrix methods in detail in her book Treasure Chest of Six Sigma Growth Methods, Tools, and Best Practices: Using weighted criteria formulas, deploy these matrices in order to display and compare two or more sets of data by applying L-shaped columns that compare input and quantify items. Prioritization matrices are visual diagrams. Priority matrix diagrams are a category of quantitative analytical tools found within the seven management tools (or 7M tools) of the Six Sigma method. For example, using a semi-quantitative, analytical approach, you can utilize priority matrix tools to screen project proposals and gain buy-in from project sponsors and executive leadership. Use these tools when it is necessary to evaluate several criteria and avoid the influence of context, the different views of multiple stakeholders, and the customer/user needs in project (or product) prioritization and planning phases. Priority matrix tools provide project stakeholders with a resource to resolve disagreements openly, narrow down all proposals to the best solutions, and increase the chances of a successful project by avoiding hidden agendas and promoting consensus. Using a priority matrix tool for project prioritization and selection is a practical application of project planning and analysis techniques, made accessible by authors Michael Brassard ( The Memory Jogger 2) and David Allen ( Getting Things Done).
